A Bald Women's Road Trip

1962, San Francisco

Sharon was the one who picked up the call. She rather quickly learned that Violet Walthorpe, the founder of the Bald Women's Society had died last night. Sharon offered her condolences. As for the funeral, it of course would be a big event. That was what Violet had always done, after all. She thanked and said they would be in town.

Sharon, of course, had known Violet for many years, as had countless other bald women. In particular, Violet's oldest daughter had been her childhood nanny growing up. Being bald herself, Sharon was happy for all Violet had accomplished through her life.

Sharon was the only one in the apartment when she received the call. Soon after, her best friend Patricia arrived back. They had been friends for a very long time. They grew up in New York, but had moved to San Francisco a few years ago.

"Hey, Patty. How was work?" Sharon asked.

"It was alright." she replied. They made more small talk until Sharon revealed what she had been told over the phone.

Patricia was of course said at this news. "She was old, but it's a loss to our community for sure."

"Definitely. Do you think you'll be able to take some time off work?" Sharon asked.

"Probably. Should we ask Su and Janet?"

"Oh, yes. I'm sure they'd like to go." They went across the hall to their friends' apartment and knocked.

"Hi, come in!" Su said, opening it. Like Sharon and Patricia, she was in her twenties. She was born shortly after her parents came over from China.

Seeing the two, Janet came over and greeted them. She was practically impossible to miss- she was only a few inches off from being seven feet tall. Su and Janet had both grown up in the San Francisco area, but of course were familiar with Violet.

The four bald women sat down and went about discussing Violet and the funeral. Su and Janet agreed they would probably be able to attend with the other two.

"Do you think we could drive? I mean, we could probably make it in time." Sharon suggested. She and Patricia had come to San Francisco by car originally.

"I'd be up for that." said Janet.

The others agreed and began planning out their trip. They decided to get a rental car, calling ahead and choosing the first one recommended. They were going to a solemn event, but the women were excited to get on the road and see some sights.

The morning of the trip finally came and Sharon got a call to come down. She got the others up. The woman dropping off the car was a little surprised at first, but came out so the others could get in.

"Alright, here we go." said Sharon, starting the car.

"You think we'll learn anything new about each other?" Janet asked.

"Well, we already live with each other. I doubt we'll learn anything too new." replied Su.

"I hope you're right." said Sharon as they got on their way.
